Clenchwarton Primary School

Holocaust Memorial Day

In a week starting with Holocaust Memorial Day, pupils at our school have been learning about Judaism.

We were visited by Marsha and Todd Parker, of Discovering Judaism, Worldviews Support Service for Schools, on Monday.

Pupils learned about the Jewish festival of Passover which is celebrated in the spring of every year and about the rules of kashrut - kosher food.

They had the chance to learn about the special meal (Seder) which marks the start of the festival, and to try-on items including a Yarmulke (skull cap). They also had the chance to taste Matzah - a special flat cracker which is mostly eaten at Passover when bread is not allowed.

“Visits like these enable the children to have hands-on experiences. Our RE curriculum has been designed to be knowledge rich and taught through an enquiry approach. We are very fortunate with our links to the local community and having opportunities for enrichment like this for children to meet Marsha and Todd helps them develop their understanding of Judaism,” said Charlotte Howells, deputy head at Clenchwarton Primary School.

She added that the children thought the food they sampled was ‘scrumptious’ and they had all learned a lot about Passover and the laws of kashrut.

Pupils at Gaywood Primary School and West Lynn Primary School were also visited by Marsha and Todd for a similar lesson.

Nationally, Holocaust Memorial Day was marked on Monday (27), the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp by Russian troops towards the end of World War Two.
